HOW TO PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN & EAT ALONE
You’ve done it…you’re out in the world alone! Whether it’s a trip to Bali or the neighboring city, having to eat any meal alone can make you feel self-conscious. Unless you’re suffering from Solomangarephobia, your only options aren’t wolfing down lunch & quickly bolting or scrolling through your phone the entire time. Nope! Enjoy your solitude…in fact, embrace it! Here’s some ideas on how to make the most of your dining sans-partner:
Relax & sit back! Enjoy being at one with your favorite person…YOU! Once you've got your order sorted, just sit back & take note of your surroundings. I play this game when I’m eating alone….I call it “ID the perp”. I look at someone for a count of 10 & try & memorize every detail about their appearance, so if they go postal, I can nail the sketch artist’s drawing. (Yes, I know I watch WAY too many crime shows!). It’s kinda fun though! People watching is so interesting! I imagine who these people are, where they’re going, what they do for a living…all sorts of weird stuff. It’s also good to be aware of your surroundings when you travel & this kind of stuff hones your skills.
Ask to sit up at the bar…that’s where the action is! Most people who sit up at the bar are solo as well, so you just might make a friend. If the bartender is worth his salt, he’ll make you feel comfortable & it’s also a great way to nab a seat in a busy restaurant without a reservation. I’ve snagged a bar stool at some of the busiest restaurants, just by asking the hostess if they squeeze another chair in for me at the bar. If I’m in a place that’s a bit sketchy, I ALWAYS tip the bartender HEAVY…get the crew on your side so if you need something, they’ll more than likely be there for you.
